Hieratic, sacred, almost magic, I Sette Savi of Fausto Melotti are reunited in a new agora - the Porta di Milano, the space at Malpensa Airport where art welcomes visitors from around the world. In the stunning display created by Michele De Lucchi, the recently restored sculptural group will be visible for nine months, while awaiting a new permanent home. Created in 1961 by one of the most important Italian sculptors of the 1900s, the work was chosen by a commission of exceptional architects - Piero Portaluppi, Franco Albini and Renzo Gerla - to embellish the garden of a Milanese high school. But the work has a complicated story. In 1959, Melotti created, for the IV Triennial of Milan, a group of 12 plaster figures entitled Coerenza dell’Uomo (The Coherence of Man). By the end of the show, only seven sculptures remained intact. And so the number seven and its web of correspondences conquered the imagination of the sculptor - there are seven musical notes - an music is a star in the art of Melotti - and as many wonders of the ancient world. Seven has a special place in Christian thinking, in philosophy and ancient mathematics, where it is the symbol of order in the universe. It’s no coincidence that there are seven Sages in the Greek tradition of which Plato speaks. Called upon to create a new group, Melotti decided to dedicate himself to them. In I Sette Savi, every statue is similar to but different than the others. The sequence is executed with musical rhythm, following the idea of a variation on a theme - a sort of stone poem, in which the aura of the ancient Sages manifests all its allure.
Fifteenth Century Milan goes on display at the Museo del Duomo - designs from the "Atlantic Codex" and immersive reconstructions reveal the ideas of the genius Da Vinci for the city’s greatest landmark building.
