The artist Angèle Etoundi Essamba is engaged in a reflection on the identity of the African woman. Of Cameroonian origin, Essamba now lives and works in the Netherlands. For almost forty years she has been describing the women she photographs from a humanist perspective with a vision that is at the same time aesthetic, idealistic, realistic and social. In her shots, harmonious compositions take shape where feminine gestures, expressions and emotions capture inner beauty, dismantling the stereotypical vision that depict african women as submissive, exotic and confined only to certain roles. Pride and self-awareness are the aspects that emerge strongly from Essamba's works. Over 40 black and white and color works created between 1985 and 2022 are on display at the Museum of Rome in Trastevere.
