In 1983, Kikuchi Tomo was invited to hold an exhibition, "Japanese Ceramics Today" at the Thomas M. Evan Gallery of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C., USA. This exhibition demonstrated Tomo's desire to present the state of Japanese ceramics and allowed her to understand the importance of cultural exchange. The Kikuchi Collection Exhibition aims to tell how contemporary Japanese ceramic artists immersed themselves in their work during a historical period - the late 1970s and 1980s - in which social values were very different from those of today.
