Barong is a panther-like creature from Balinese mythology. It is considered a protector against evil forces and playfully depicted as a figure with large eyes, snapping jaws and layers of fur. During the Barong Festival held at the ancient Taman Ayun Temple, built in the 17th century and belonging to the royal family of the Mengwi Empire, two male dancers move the mask: the dancer in front supports the head and jaws, while the dancer behind moves in coordination. Their movements must be completely synchronized to perform the rapid turns and jumps. In tradition, the presence of the Barong has always been seen as a good omen. The dance inspired by this mythological figure, among the most popular on the island and declared a World Heritage by UNESCO, is an event not to be missed during the Barong Festival held in one of the temples that are part of the national heritage.
