Chiharu Shiota at the Jameel Arts Centre

Chiharu Shiota at the Jameel Arts Centre
#Art

A room where a multitude of red wool yarns transform the space like the brushstrokes of a painting, creating a sky that expands above an abra, a traditional sort of boat in the Emirates, one of the symbols of Dubai. This is the installation, entitled Departure, that Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota created for the Jameel Arts Centre. A work that explores important themes for the artist - the idea of movement, connection, memory, a reflection on the sense of life as an uncertain, precarious journey, temporary like almost all her works of art. She is not interested in having her works last over time, what is important to her is the emotional impact they can have on the public, in whose memory they continue to live on. The same sense of temporariness acts as an amplifier of emotions, heightens the perceptions and the capacity to enter fully into contact with the experience. The work with the strings of yarns, lines that intersect throughout the space like a web, combined with common objects, is the distinctive sign of this artist that left Japan to move to Berlin and gave up painting for an art form that enables her to express herself in a way that is more in tune with her own identity.
