Water and Islam

Water and Islam
#Exhibitions

Water, the essence of life, a precious element often defined as holy. In Islamic countries, water has always played a fundamental role, not only on a practical level, but also regarding the religious, spiritual and artistic realms. Drop by Drop, Life Falls from the Sky, organised by the Sharjah Museums Authority in collaboration with the Torino Museums Foundation, looks at the relationship of Islam with water in all its forms. It’s no coincidence that this exhibition was born from the combined forces of Italy and the United Arab Emirates with the intent of shining a light on the shared cultural heritage between Italy and the Arab-Islamic world. The exhibition is divided into four sections - The Blessings of Water and Islam, Water and Daily Life, Traditional Hammam and Gardens. Over 120 works of art on loan from 16 Italian private and public collections, some from the permanent collection of the Museum of Islamic Civilisation of Sharjah and the Art Museum of Sharjah. Amphoras, jugs, vases, fountains, rugs and manuscripts that bear witness to the ancient origins of Islam’s age-old special relationship with water.
