“Through the treasures of the Earth, I bear witness to the curative and constructive qualities of plants. Through my artistic work, I lend cacti human sentiments and capacities, moving them to a higher frequency and to alternative reigns, where their power can become palpable.” With these words, Egyptian artist Mohamed Abla introduces the exhibition Earthly Treasures, the fifth personal exhibition of the artist at Tabari Artspace. Born in Egypt in 1953, Abla is a multidisciplinary artist who, during the course of his career, has experimented and combined various techniques, using, for example, lithography and collage in his paintings. In 2017, for a preceding series entitled The Silk Road (2017), travelling along the actual Silk Road, Abla discovered and learned the technique of “marbling” which he went on to use in his artistic practice, creating layers of silk paper combined with collage and painting, using both oils and acrylics. The body of works displayed in this exhibition start, on the other hand, from the plant world and, in particular, with the cactus and is made up of a series of mixed-techniques collages of various sizes. Extrapolating the cactus from its environmental and geographic context, enriching it with flowers and stars, using a bright and potent chromatism, Abla creates a new and joyous reality.
