Rethinking Africa in a Large Photo Exhibition

Past and future, desire and memory, imagination and reality meet in a large exhibition that the Tate is dedicating to African photography, starting next summer. Artists of various origins and generations have journeyed this immense continent from one end to another, re-examining cultures and landscapes. Going beyond the traditional expository clichés, the exhibition explores the role of the image as a tool for narration and the construction of identity, passing across borders and time zones, dreamlike utopias and lively metropolitan scenes. Themes like spirituality, city planning and the environmental emergency accompany visitors in discovering the varied realities of the African continent, a journey among multiform stories and geographies. At the centre of the project, the mutating nature and dynamic of photography and video - mediums voyaging across time and space - which, through the visions of the numerous artists on display, allow us to reimagine the diverse cultures and historical narratives of Africa in a powerful and transformative way.
