Art and Cohesion According to Theaster Gates

Art and Cohesion According to Theaster Gates
#Exhibitions

An atmosphere suspended between playful and reflective greets the public at this highly-awaited personal exhibition of Theaster Gates at TANK Shanghai, non-profit space hosted in the former fuel-cistern of the airport of Longhua, renovated by Open Architecture in the area of West Bund. Gates recreates, within cistern number 3, an ice-rink, giving spectators the possibility to visit the exhibition wearing skates, moving to the rhythm of music, surrounded by psychedelic sculptures, the lights of which seem to harken back to the clubs of the 1980s in Chicago. Neon visions inspired by Agnes Martin but with a more pop interpretation here, run the perimeter of the space; looking up, other neon pieces recall the Afro-American community, the demographic and social realities connected to it and which Theaster Gates has referred to in several of his projects. Also in the exhibition, the artist doesn’t wish only to speak of art, but of the need to create a new sense of community and sharing.
