Ofoto, one of the first galleries in China to have chosen its specific focus to be on photography, presents the work of Zhang Bojun for his latest monographic show, Jingshan Park. Zhang Bojun, born in 1964 in the northern region of Heilongjiang, dedicated almost every weekend, starting in 2019, to visiting Jingshan Park in Shanghai, a meeting point for numerous Chinese citizens, coming together to dance, sing or simply visiting the park to find refuge from daily life, losing themselves in the park’s lush nature right in the heart of the city. It was those people singing and dancing inside the park, above all people between the ages of 60 and 70 who, organised in groups, would delight to revolutionary melodies, that caught the attention of the photographer, who then made them the stars of the series on display. In these photos, the floral pattern, increasingly abstract, which the spectator seems to see, is actually comprised of individuals who have been scaled down in size then placed one next to another, seemingly to infinity. The result is surprising for the grace, elegance and harmony in combining the microscopic human dimension and the macroscopic dimension of nature and the cosmos. The individual presence is unrecognisable like in the preceding series We and allows the will of the artist to shine through, paying homage to those individuals who, despite being hidden from the eye of a distracted visitor, are the heart and soul of the park.
