Matisse by Matisse - the largest personal exhibition of Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) organised in China - was born from a synergy between the UCCA and the Musée Matisse Le Cateau-Cambrésis and offers over 200 works by the artist from the Museum’s collection. Oil paintings, sculptures, ink drawings, prints and illustrations, as well as sketches and textile pieces, are at the heart of this retrospective the title of which exalts the centrality of the artist himself. Most of the works on display are from the personal collection of Matisse, while the choice of each work respects the indications left by the artist himself as well. Thus, Matisse by Matisse is the artistic heritage which most directly and intimately exemplifies the work of Matisse, his creative process and his ideas about art. The exhibition is organised into ten chronological sections which represent the principal stages of the artist’s career - from the copies which pay homage to the ancient masters, his first stylistic explorations as an art student, but also representative works of his turn towards Fauvism and, successively, during the 1920s and ‘30s, his studies of the human body and portraiture with mediums like sculpture, drawing and prints, right up to the sketches and his models in the Chapel of Vence when he was almost eighty. An additional section, created by the curatorial team of the UCCA, studies the influence of Matisse and Fauvism on modern painting in China from the 1920s to the 1940s.
