Yao Hua was an important Chinese painter and calligrapher of the late Qing Dynasty, who lived in Guizhou in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is known for his deep knowledge of Chinese artistic traditions. He was inspired by the great Masters of the past, such as Wang Xizhi for calligraphy and Dong Yuan for painting. However, he managed to infuse his works with a sense of contemporaneity, making them relevant for his time. Yao Hua had great attention to minute details and executed his painting and calligraphy works with extreme precision in his brush strokes, giving his works a depth and richness that are still highly appreciated today. Yao Hua was also a Chinese teacher at Tsing Hua College. Based on the cooperation between Tsinghua University Art Museum and Guizhou Provincial Museum, the exhibition The Immortal Generalist of An Era: Yao Hua Art Exhibition aims to present the versatile scholar and artist through a selection of works in poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal engraving and writing paper.
