The Talent and Sensitivity of the Young Zhang Ruyi

The Talent and Sensitivity of the Young Zhang Ruyi
#Exhibitions

The works of the young Chinese artist Zhang Ruyi capture the precarious and fleeting nature inherent to daily life in a constantly-changing mega-city like Shanghai, the city where the artist was born and continues to work today. Through the recovery and poetic use of discarded industrial materials, taken from construction sites or simply found during the artist’s wanderings about the city, Zhang Ruyi works like a bricoleur, using and enobling what is at hand which then bears witness to stories, memories, individual and collective sentiments, all offered by the materials themselves. The exhibition - the largest institutional exhibition ever created for the artist in China - doesn’t only offer the historic works of the artist, which offer a structured and coherent modus operandi of the artist, but also installations created specifically for the spaces of the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, the architecture of which is a precious remnant of the industrial architecture of the 1950s. This is a tribute to one of the most original, sensitive and representative voices of Chinese contemporary art.
