Xie Qi’s exhibition The Summer Heat Has Been Gone For Years is the first monographic exhibition at the Galerie Urs Meile. Works on canvas dating back to 2019 focused on the human body and portraits greet the spectator with subtle brushstrokes and a style suspended between the quotidian sphere and that of dreams, typical of the artist’s work. Xie Qi confers upon her portrait subjects - often highlighting details of their bodies, such as the face, arms or torso - the heat of emotions, the tension of desire and the anxiety of turmoil. The sources of inspiration for Xie Qi include friends, quotidian objects like banknotes with people’s portraits and plants that recall human organs and photos, but also classic themes from art history. Interested more in a psychological reconstruction of portrayed subjects rather than a mere realistic representation, Xie Qi captures transitory moments and sensations, fleeting in a creative process articulated between memory and ex novo creation. The brushstrokes, the blurry contours and the colours often create an aura of mystery around the images, as if pertaining to the past, but only vaguely specified. This exhibition is an opportunity to take a look a the most recent creative trajectory of Xie Qi, concentrating systematically on the audacious experiments of recent years.
