Considered one of the top artists from the Persian Gulf and a pioneer of conceptual art in the Middle East, Faisal Samra, born in Bahrain in 1956, has based his artistic practice on experimentation and research. Digital photography, painting, sculpture, video and performance, the artist has explored and continues to explore various mediums while always looking at existential themes. Through his work, Faisal Samra challenges traditional methods of representation and opposes the levelling sort of culture that seeks to make us all the same, annulling the depths of our identities. Having travelled widely and having lived in various parts of the world, he defines himself as "a nomad wandering through time", and the concept of time is fundamental in his work, as demonstrated, once again, by the recent works on display in his monographic exhibition at the Ayyam Gallery in Dubai, entitled Thriving Emotions - Immortal Moment. In works such as 1000+01 Grip of Time and 99 Moments, he rambles through a gathering of creative acts which grab emotions at their apex, the artist condensing the present in a conceptual moment, abstract and immortal.
