The energy of a musical, the passion of an opera, the poetry of a French song and the electrical charge of acrobatic dancing - that’s the winning recipe of Notre Dame de Paris, the play by Riccardo Cocciante and Luc Plamondon that, in two decades, has enchanted more than 30 million spectators in 23 countries around the world, from France to Kazakistan, from Italy to Korea. To celebrate its 20th Birthday, Notre Dame returns to the prestigious stage of the London Coliseum for seven emotionally riveting evenings with a stellar cast accompanied by a live orchestra. While the starring role of Quasimodo will be played by Italian Angelo Del Vecchio, the face and the voice of the beautiful Esmeralda are those of Lebanese singer Hiba Tawaji; then there are Daniel Lavoie (Frollo), Richard Charest (Gringoire), Alyzée Lalande/Idesse (Fleur-de-Lys), Martin Giroux (Phoebus) and Jay (Clopin). In the shadow of the world’s most famous cathedral, the romantic atmospheres of Victor Hugo, Medieval Paris, the dramas, the loves and the conflicts which conquered generations of readers decked out in contemporary garb with its coloured lights and what composer Cocciante defined as a “pop opera”, capable of translating “the way Puccini and Verdi told stories with music” into a form that modern audiences can fully appreciate. And speaking of traditions, it is the first time that a French musical hits the stage in London in its original language, a choice made to help conserve the lyrical poetry of Plamondon, solely accompanied by discreet English subtitles and the unforgettable melodies of Cocciante.
