Sun at Night - Shilpa Gupta at the Barbican Centre

Sun at Night - Shilpa Gupta at the Barbican Centre
#Art

With her multidisciplinary approach that gives a nod to a wide gamma of instruments and processes, from video to photography, artist Shilpa Gupta presents a new project conceived for the “The Curve” of the Barbican. For her commission number 34, Gupta unsheathes the acclaimed project For, In Your Tongue, I Cannot Fit (2017-2018), an installation that involves one-hundred microphones suspended above as many metallic points, each of which perforates a page of verse by an author imprisoned for their writing or their ideas. There are works by Faiz Ahmad Faiz and the poetry of Azerbaijani poet Nesimi, who inspired the title of the exhibition, while the sonic landscape, thanks to the microphones, resounds with choruses and verses but also languages, from Arabic to Chinese, from Hindu to Spanish, in a harmonious accord of solidarity from a distance. Through each poem that Gupta cries out within the “Curve”, attention is brought to global stories and experiences, raising urgent questions on the freedom of expression, censorship and resistance, giving voice to those who have been silenced.
