At Teatro alla Scala, the new year opens with Giuseppe Verdi. For the first time since 21 April 1990 when La Traviata was staged under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Verdi’s masterpiece returns to Milan with a sumptuous staging under the theatrical direction of Liliana Cavani, set design by Oscar-winner Dante Ferretti and costumes by Gabriella Pescucci. Of the twelve performances, the first nine are under the musical direction of Myung-Whun Chung, one of the world’s top conductors of Verdi. Chung continues an already impressive string of works at La Scala, having already conducted both Simon Boccanegra and Don Carlo. Marina Rebeka, born in 1980, one of the today’s great performers of the role of Violetta, once again takes on the lead female role, while Leo Nucci plays the role of Germont’s father, switching off with Placido Domingo, on stage the 12th, 14th and 17th of March. Francesco Meli, already a huge success next to Anna Netrebko in 2017, and emerging talent Benjamin Bernheim, who after this performance at La Scala will go on to play Alfredo at Covent Garden as well, will take their turns in the role of Alfredo Germont. In the three performances in March, the podium will be occupied by Marco Armiliato with another stellar cast - Sonya Yoncheva will play Violetta while, once again, Francesco Meli will play Alfredo, and the role of Giorgio Germont will see the return of Placido Domingo to La Scala.
