Just a short walk from The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie, six contemporary artists take on the masterpiece of Leonardo, highlighting our times. Resounding names on the international scene, such as Anish Kapoor, Robert Longo, Wang Guangyi meet Italians Masbedo and Nicola Samorì at the historic Palazzo delle Stelline, which, thirty years ago, saw another great star of art dialogue with The Last Supper - Andy Warhol, who, in 1987, carried out, in Milan, his very final series The Last Supper. Furthermore, close to the current home of the Fondazione Stelline, the genius of the Renaissance tended to the garden and vineyard which he received as a gift from Ludovico il Moro, as well as spending time among members of the high society of the time at the Casa degli Atellani. 500 years after the death of the artist, scientist and inventor from Vinci, L’Ultima Cena dopo Leonardo points out how the famed work continues to influence contemporary art in an original dialogue between East and West. Curator Demetrio Paparoni suggests, “Anish Kapoor is the artist that, more than any other, best incarnates the spirit of Leonardo, concentrating his work on the relationship between art and science, between the disappearance and appearance of form.” However, the exhibition also features the monumental polyptych by Wang Guangyi, on display in the West for the first time, which, with eight canvases measuring four metres by two metres, overlap the iconography of Leonardo, as well as the traditional Chinese landscapes utilising ancient pictorial techniques of Wu Lou Hen, evoked in the works of the Chinese artist Yue Minjun, also on display. And while the American Robert Longo and the Italian Nicola Samorì are known for depicting the present by reinterpreting the masterpieces of the past, a poetic video by Masbedo shows visitors the hands of Pinin Brambilla Barcilon, the art restorer we must all thank for the survival of the truly delicate painting of The Last Supper.
