The program celebrating the Five-Hundredth anniversary of Leonardo continues at the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana. One of the key locations for the art of Di Vinci’s genius, in the second part of 2019, the Milanese institution takes an in-depth look at the graphic techniques and innovations with a select group of drawings. On display, rare and precious “fogli” touched by the hand of the Renaissance artist himself, but also his most gifted students, such as Francesco Melzi and Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, which bear witness to his role as a master within an actual school, as well as his influence on art to come. The exhibition, curated by Benedetta Spadaccini seeks to display the drawings of Leonardo in a new way within a project conceived to attract experts as well as the public at large. “The fundamental basis of this exhibition,” explains the curator, “is the major role that Leonardo had in introducing new drawings techniques, as well as the improvements and experiments involving already existing techniques.” The exhibition highlights works in ink, coloured chalk, pencils and metal-pointed drawing implements, in an itinerary that shows off the original personalities of Leonardo’s students as well, while video and macro-photography bring us a backstage look at the latest results of scholars investigating the techniques behind the drawings.
