An everlasting masterpiece of the opera, a historic staging, the freshness of the students of La Scala’s Academy and the experience of two of the greatest specialists of the Verdian repertoire - these are the ingredients of Rigoletto 2019, at the Piermarini in the celebrated version of Gilbert Deflo. In the role of the famed jester is Leo Nucci who, with this role - along with Figaro of Rossini - laid the foundation of his legendary career, while the direction will be entrusted to maestro Daniel Oren. Among the jewels of this production, the stunning scenery conceived by Ezio Frigerio in an attempt to create a play “that even Verdi would like”. “I think it’s really beautiful to create this character who is deformed on the outside but is totally passionate and full of love on the inside,” wrote the composer as he was still working on the piece. And, in fact, the grotesque spirit of the jester gives shape to an opera which admirably blends the various vocal registers with vocal melodies that express every possible emotion. The initial objections and censorship of Verdi set forth by the Austrian authorities had no effect - limitations became ulterior stimulus and Rigoletto immediately became Verdi’s first truly mature work, dense with dramatic power and a psychological depth to the characters that had never been seen before.
