The fantastic bestiary, the marvelous circus characters, the protagonists of fables and biblical episodes present in the masterpieces of Marc Chagall build a colourful bridge between the New World and the Old World. Paris and New York, emblematic capitals of modern art, mark two important legs in the journey of the artist. While the Ville Lumière was his chosen city, offering the young painter from Russian a fertile terrain for his experimental research, also thanks to the lively avant-garde of the first decade of the 1900s, New York was, above all, a place of exile during the harrowing 1940s, period when the creativity of the artist took on new proportions. After the war, numerous exhibitions and important commissions reinforced this bridge between Paris and New York, the city which offered the painter diverse and urgent experiences, indispensable to nourishing his work. An immersive exhibition at the Atelier des Lumières esplores the tie between the painter and the two cities. While, in Paris, Chagall dialogued with the Cubist and Fauvist movements, developing his rich and intense palette, in Vitebsk, he joined the heads of the avant-garde, calling for the renewal of art. But it was in New York that the experience of the space and architecture of the New World further enriched his revolutionary exploration. Moving beyond painting, Chagall now embraced the stage and costumes of the ballet, then sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, coloured glass and collage in a multidisciplinary (and monumental) research which will amaze visitors as they are immersed in this digital creation. In this 360° voyage, all the themes that make up the images of the artist will run along the walls of the Atelier des Lumières, accompanied by classical and jazz music, an integral part of the cultural universe of the artist.
