The first personal exhibition of the Italian artist, based in London. Quayola brings his study of the images of the past and the rediscovery of nature, through a machine’s perspective to the HOW Museum. On display, 50 works including digital pieces, video, sculpture and a robotic installation. In his works, Quayola uses technology to explore apparently polar opposites - the artificial and the real, the figurative and the abstract, the old and the new. Thanks to his lengthy exploration of new media, Quayola uses the great masterpieces of art history as his matrix, in order to look at the construction of a visual system, deconstruct it and then re-evoke it using digital elaboration. Hellenistic sculpture, classical art, are translated into sculptural algorithms; the painting of the Old Masters, the masterpieces of the Renaissance and the Baroque are analysed using computer-based methods, transformed into digital formations and thus into new subjects to contemplate. Thanks to personalised software, he builds immersive installations which include audio-visual performances, videos, sculptures and works on paper. Along with the reworking of actual works of art, the visual language of nature itself is transformed into new artificial landscapes produced by machines with surprising effects, somewhere between figurative art and poetic abstraction.
