“Painting is not a speculation of the mind or spirit, it is a gesture from within” is how Jean Miotte defined his art. From the very beginning the artist privileged gesture and action to transpose onto the canvas an emotion that testified to his complex relationship with sensitive reality, a philosophical or spiritual experience at the service of the symbolism of the image. His poetics found inspiration in unresolved gestures: throughout his life he tried to avoid the pitfalls of banality and indulgence. He participated in the first Paris Biennale in 1959, presenting one of his works in the “Informel” section. Hence the consideration by many that Jean Miotte was one of the Masters of Art Informel, a definition that the artist has always rejected. Today his works belong to the collections of prestigious institutions such as the MoMA and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
