A florist, a tea salon, a bar and even a fully-funtional “Rockbund Art Museum Butcher Shop” - visitors at the RAM find themselves in a parallel world, created inside the museum, in a place that is as far as could be imagined from the very idea of the museum itself. Daily life, the public space, the street. But Tobias Rehberger knows how to work these elements, incorporating artistic aspects into these environs, playing with culture and meaning to suggest a new vision of the relationship between art and daily life. The tea salon becomes a collection of errant representations on the part of the West of a traditional “tea ceremony”; the flower shop is actually it’s own sculpture exhibition, featuring works by friends of the artist. The neon works imitate typical commercial signage to be found on every street. The installation Forbidden in Heaven, Useless in Hell (El Redomon Version) takes up the entire upper floor with transformational elements, asymmetrical walls, “blinding” camouflage, typical of the German artist, who transforms a museum hall into a bar - a place open at nights where the public can drink under the light of an enormous solar sculpture, synchronised with the cycle of sunrise/sunset of El Redomon in Argentina. If You Don’t Use Your Eyes to See, You Will Use Them to Cry, presents us with an obvious truth - that the world is, fundamentally, exactly how we decide to see it.
