Every three years, Roppongi Crossing exhibitions offer a snapshot of the Japanese art scene. Curators from the Mori Art Museum join with guest curators to plan each exhibition, and this intersection of multiple viewpoints results in a diverse lineup of Japanese artists, from seasoned international veterans to promising young newcomers. One distinguishing feature that has distinguished each edition of the event is Mori Art Museum’s commitment to presenting a “crossroads” of creative endeavors by showcasing not only contemporary art but also works by creators from other genres, including architecture, fashion, and design. For this eighth Roppongi Crossing, the curators examine the state of contemporary Japanese art from an international perspective. In today’s world, despite multicultural progress, conflict and division emerge in many settings, directly impacting the lives and practices of artists, changing what they do, and generating new types of language and forms of expression.
