The Tokyo Marathon 2026 will take place on Sunday, March 1, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year and a major milestone in the global road running calendar. Organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation with the support of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the event is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors series and will also serve as a qualifying race for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games and for Japan’s Olympic team ahead of the 2028 Games. The course, certified by JAAF, AIMS and World Athletics, starts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and winds through some of the city’s most emblematic districts, including Ueno-Hirokoji, Nihombashi, Asakusa, Ginza and Hibiya, finishing in front of Tokyo Station along Gyoko-dori Avenue. Largely flat and set in the urban heart of the metropolis, the route is considered among the fastest and most scenic on the world circuit. The marathon will start at 9.10 am, with a seven-hour time limit to complete the 42,195 kilometers. Wheelchair athletes will start at 9.05 am with a two-hour and ten-minute limit, while the 10,7-kilometer race, reserved for youth and disabled categories, will take place in parallel. Around 39.000 runners are expected to take part, including 38.500 in the main marathon and 500 in the shorter race. Entry fees are set at 19.800 yen for residents of Japan and 230 U.S. dollars for international participants. Alongside the main competition, the 2026 edition will introduce new features such as the “Duo Team” format and the “Run as One” program, designed to promote inclusion and accessibility. Since its debut in 2007, the Tokyo Marathon has become one of the world’s six major marathons, embodying the spirit of a city that seamlessly blends discipline, participation and spectacle in a day that is both a popular celebration and a sporting challenge.
