NYEPI - SECLUSION DAY

Nyepi is the Icaka New Year, a day of absolute silence for Hindu followers, when no activity, amusement or travel is allowed. In addition, no fires may be lit. This year, Nyepi Day is on Friday, 23 March 2012.

Started with the Makiyis or Melasti, the procession of Hindu followers carrying temples effigies to the beach for purification ceremony on Wednesday, 21 March 2012. On the day before the Nyepi Day on Thursday, 22 March 2012, they hold a great sacrificial ceremony offered to the underworld spirit called Tawur Agung Kesanga, which settlement will be held at 12noon followed by the Ogoh - Ogoh carnival, the procession of the symbolic statues of the spirits.

The whole island will be closed for activity starting from 6 a.m. on the Nyepi Day up to 6 a.m. the following day.

SARASWATI DAY

The day is devoted to the Goddess of Knowledge, Art and Literature – Dewi Saraswati – who is symbolized by a beautiful woman with four hands riding on a white swan among water lilies. Her hands hold a lontar; a chain which represents knowledge, and a musical instrument as a symbol of science. During the ceremony, resource books are piled high and blessed with offerings of fruits, flowers and a sprinkling of holy water. Students take this opportunity to pray for guidance in future studies and to lead a harmonious life in keeping with the basic guidelines of Hinduism.

GALUNGAN

Galungan is the most important holiday symbolizing the victory of Virtue (Dharma) upon Evil (Adharma). Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremony that is celebrated by all Balinese. The holiday is specialized by the fitting of 'penjor', a tall bamboo pole splendidly decorated with woven young coconut leaves, fruit, cakes and flowers, on the right side of every house entrance. People are attired in their finest clothes and jewels this day.

KUNINGAN

Kuningan is the second most important day of the Balinese Hindu calendar. The Balinese attend religious services and make offerings to the gods. At the holy spring temple Tirta Empul, at Tampaksiring, people partake in a ritual purification, bathing in the spring.
