Nyepi is the Icaka New Year, a day of absolute silence for Hindu followers, when no activity, amusement or travel is allowed. In addition, no fires may be lit. This year, Nyepi Day is on Friday, 23 March 2012.
Started with the Makiyis or Melasti, the procession of Hindu followers carrying temples effigies to the beach for purification ceremony on Wednesday, 21 March 2012. On the day before the Nyepi Day on Thursday, 22 March 2012, they hold a great sacrificial ceremony offered to the underworld spirit called Tawur Agung Kesanga, which settlement will be held at 12noon followed by the Ogoh - Ogoh carnival, the procession of the symbolic statues of the spirits.
The whole island will be closed for activity starting from 6 a.m. on the Nyepi Day up to 6 a.m. the following day.
