Before the flowers bloom, the air shifts. It is an almost imperceptible change, a tension slowly dissolving as the world settles into a new rhythm. From this fragile threshold emerges The Air, Softening, the group exhibition at Whitestone Gallery in Beijing.
The project brings together Bao Pei, Debbie Reda, Rebecca Bernau, Wu Shuang, and Clément Denis, five artists from different cultural backgrounds united by a sensitivity to moments of transition. Their works create a visual environment shaped by layering, repetition, ambiguous figures, and vibrant colors, where traces and gestures accumulate like signals of an unfolding transformation. Rather than depicting spring directly, the exhibition evokes its condition: a suspended moment, still undefined, where forms seem on the verge of emerging. The works enter into a quiet dialogue, allowing change to surface gradually.
Within this visual landscape, the season never appears openly. Instead, it lingers as a subtle presence - hidden in details and in the smallest shifts of perception, much like the air itself when something is about to change.
