The musical Chicago comes to Dubai

First staged on Broadway in 1975 and inspired by real-life crime stories, Chicago follows the fortunes of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two women accused of murder who turn their trials into opportunities for fame. Helping them is the charismatic lawyer Billy Flynn, a master at winning over public opinion. From 16 to 20 December 2026, the acclaimed musical will be performed at Dubai's Coca-Cola Arena. Created by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, Chicago holds a unique place in the history of American musical theatre. Fosse's choreography - minimalist, sensual and built on almost geometric precision - established a visual language that remains instantly recognisable, while songs such as All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango e Razzle Dazzle have become enduring classics of the international musical theatre repertoire. The show's extraordinary success is largely tied to its 1996 revival, which continues to run on both Broadway and London's West End. Thanks to that production, Chicago became the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, a record that reflects its enduring popularity over nearly three decades. Its international reputation was further strengthened by Rob Marshall's 2002 film adaptation, which won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The Dubai engagement offers audiences the opportunity to experience one of the defining works of contemporary musical theatre in its original stage form. More than a celebrated classic, Chicago remains a landmark production whose fusion of choreography, music and storytelling helped redefine the modern Broadway musical and continues to influence theatre productions around the world.
