Anicka Yi’s art is vital, indeed it is alive. Although the Korean-American artist, winner of numerous international awards and recognitions, focuses on organic and ephemeral materials such as bacteria, fungi and algae, the world she recreates goes far beyond what is human. It is the demonstration of how our sensory experiences are shaped by biological and cultural forces.
Anicka Yi’s works are a hymn to the infinite nuances of human emotions and sensations. Fragility and interdependence, life and death are intertwined in the existences of the organisms that she places before the gaze of the visitor. Her works give life to multiple explorations and are the result of rigorous research in biology, technology and philosophy.
