The Fragility of Glass, Transformed into Light: Jean-Michel Othoniel in Beijing

For Jean-Michel Othoniel, glass is far more than a material - it is a metaphor for the human condition. Transparent and delicate, yet remarkably resilient, it has been at the heart of the French artist's practice for more than three decades. Renowned for his monumental necklaces of glass beads, fountains, and luminous installations, Othoniel transforms light into an emotional experience. In Beijing, Dazzling Trilogy brings together some of his most celebrated works alongside the new site-specific installation Rivière Rose, a river of hand-cast pink glass bricks flowing through the gallery like a dreamlike vision.
The exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of the Espaces Louis Vuitton and the 10th anniversary of Hors-les-murs, the Fondation's programme that brings works from its collection to exhibition spaces around the world, offering free access to contemporary art in cities including Beijing, Tokyo, Venice, Munich, and Seoul. Through suspended tears, glass boats, and monumental strands of beads, Othoniel creates a contemplative landscape where poetry, memory, and spirituality converge. For the artist, beauty is never merely decorative - it is a force capable of protecting, transforming, and offering hope even in moments of fragility.
