The Wonders of the Yoshida Family, Japanese Master Engravers

The Wonders of the Yoshida Family, Japanese Master Engravers
#Exhibitions

For the first time in Europe and the UK a major exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery brings together the works of one of the most important Japanese dynasties in the art of woodblock printing, the Yoshida family. Three generations of artists including Yoshida Hiroshi, Fujio, Tōshi, Hodaka, Chizuko and Ayomi will trace the evolution of Japanese printmaking across two centuries of history. The exhibition opens with the presentation of the works of the founder of the dynasty, Yoshida Hiroshi, one of the greatest Japanese artists, pioneer of the shin hanga movement. Hiroshi traveled throughout the world and earned an international reputation for his woodcuts of American and European landscapes. The exhibition, after a long journey that will involve all the most important witnesses of the Yoshida family, will culminate with a new site-specific installation of cherry blossoms by Yoshida Ayomi, daughter of the masters Hodaka and Chizuko. The youngest member of the family, Ayomi combines traditional Japanese printmaking techniques with modern elements, often using organic materials, and has been exhibited many times in some of the most important institutions and museums around the world.
