In the Petang District, which is part of the Badung Regency, lies the historic village of Carangsari, famous for its local traditions, culture and breathtaking views. The town is famous for being the birthplace of the national hero I Gusti Ngurah Rai who led the Independence War against the Dutch. It is also the place where the famous theatrical figure of Topeng Tugek comes from, invented by the Master I Gusti Ngurah Windia. Topeng Tugek is a character typical of traditional theater performances who was much appreciated by the local community in the 1970s and who usually brings light humor and educational messages. One way to delve into the village and slowly discover it up close is to cycle along the streets until you reach the sacred nutmeg forest in Sangeh where you can admire surprisingly polite monkeys.
