The exhibition dedicated to The Red Studio, the masterpiece painted by Henri Matisse in 1911 and which depicts the artist's work space in the Parisian suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux arrives in Paris at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The exhibition, presented in May 2022 at the MoMA in New York and then exhibited at the SMK, National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen until February 2023, is an important international production. The exhibition is built around the painting which has been part of MoMA's collections since 1949 and is enriched by archive material, paintings and drawings by the French artist. Among the works on display are The Young Sailor (II) (1906) - which will be presented in France for the first time after 31 years - and lesser-known works by Matisse, such as Corsica, The Old Mill (1898) and objects whose location is was discovered only recently. Three of these paintings - Bathers (1907), Le Luxe (II) (1907-1908) and Nude with White Scarf (1909) - belong to SMK as part of a significant collection of works by Matisse. The exhibition also includes a series of paintings and drawings closely linked to The Red Studio, such as The Blue Window (1913) from MoMA and Large Red Interior (1948) from the Center Pompidou. The use of the color red that brightly pervades the work is said to have inspired many other artists, not least Mark Rothko and Ellsworth Kelly, and is a theme that Matisse himself has repeatedly addressed in his artistic practice over the years.
