One hundred years have passed since the publication of the Surrealist Manifesto, written by the French poet André Breton. The exhibition at the Museum of Art Pudong, created in collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland, exposes to the public 100 works including painting, sculpture and photography, created by some of the most important Surrealist artists in the world such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning. Inspired by the psychoanalytic writings of Sigmund Freud, Surrealist artists abandoned conventional techniques and set out to explore the subconscious. The fantastic visions born from their new approach to art had a profound and far-reaching impact on subsequent generations of artists around the planet. The exponents of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, for example, were heavily indebted to the generation of artists who preceded them. When it was born, Surrealism represented a response to the horrors of war and the constant threats from the modern world, today it is a page of art capable of still triggering strong emotions.
