Skateboard, Design Object
#Exhibitions

A wooden board more or less 80 centimeters long by 20 centimeters wide. And four wheels. These are the standard dimensions that from the 1950s to the present day - with all the possible micro-variations that can be imagined - have transformed a simple toy from the Californian suburbs into a sport, or rather into a lifestyle, which has overwhelmed the world, establishing itself as a true cult object for enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. The Design Museum London will for the first time in the UK tell the story of skateboard design from humble home-made beginnings to the professional and technologically advanced models of today. Approximately 90 rare and unique boards will be on display, along with over 100 other items, including hardware such as wheels and folds, safety equipment, VHS tapes, DVDs, magazines and ephemera. Together they will showcase the technical developments of skateboarding alongside its evolving social acceptance.
