Inflated and Deflated in Pop Culture and Sign Language

Inflated and Deflated in Pop Culture and Sign Language
#Exhibitions

Artist Christine Sun Kim uses sounds to investigate her relationship with spoken languages and the auditory environment. Thomas Mader works with themes related to national identity, narrative and communication. The Lighter Than Air exhibition marks their debut at White Space. The title evokes those flying machines that use lighter-than-air gases to lift themselves off the ground, such as hot air balloons and airships. The concept is applied to the different forms of inhalation and exhalation related to signed and spoken languages. Playfully interacting with inflated and deflated shapes, Kim and Mader express many ways to attract attention.
