A major exhibition at the British Museum recounts the last years of Michelangelo Buonarroti's life. A journey that brings into focus how his art and his faith evolved over the last three decades of the artist's life through a journey that faced the shared challenge of aging in a rapidly changing world. Michelangelo's notoriety for the general public focuses on famous works of his youth such as David or the vault of the Sistine Chapel. The exhibition Michelangelo: the last decades introduces visitors to the great variety and inventiveness of the last part of his career, which saw him still active until four days before his death in 1564, at the age of 88. For the first time, works such as the monumental Epiphany (circa 1550-1553) - over two meters high, the only surviving complete cartoon by Michelangelo - and the preparatory drawings of the Last Judgement, which describe how Michelangelo gave shape to one of the best-known masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.
