The exhibition Moments of Hope by Besher Koushaji at Firetti Contemporary explores with sensitivity and strength the enduring presence of hope within a context marked by conflict, memory, and transformation. The Syrian artist, born in Damascus in 1984, presents a series of works that interpret time - past, present, and future - as a single layered surface, where painting becomes a language of resistance and rebirth. His compositions feature recurring symbolic elements such as flowers, fruits, and anemones, evoking domestic memory, nature, and a deep connection to his origins. At the center of many works stands the female figure, silent yet firmly rooted, embodying endurance and the continuity of life despite suffering. Koushaji’s canvases function as emotional archives, inner landscapes in which pain and hope coexist, transforming darkness into light. His technique, based on overlapping planes and translucent layers, suggests a sense of temporal simultaneity that merges memory with desire, restoring to painting the value of a meditative and collective act. The artist turns trauma and displacement into a poetic language that avoids rhetoric, revealing both delicacy and quiet strength. The measured use of color and the composure of his figures heighten the emotional depth of his themes, making hope not an illusion but a form of resilience. In an art scene often dominated by visual noise, Koushaji offers an intimate reflection on humanity’s ability to mend its wounds and envision a possible future. Moments of Hope thus becomes an invitation to look beyond fragility, recognizing in painting a space of regeneration where hope emerges as a daily gesture of life.
