An exhibition divided into three sections reflecting the three places where we swim: the pool, the lido and nature. It starts in the 1920s when swimsuits began to be marketed for swimming rather than the Victorian preference for bathing and when seaside holidays exploded in popularity and continues to the present day and the role of swimming in modern life, such as how it influences and subverts our ideas of bodily autonomy and agency, as well as its connection to environmental issues. Over 200 objects are on display, including Pamela Anderson’s sensational Baywatch swimsuit, the first Olympic single-handed swimming Gold Medal won by a British woman, a selection of eye-catching men’s Speedos from the 1980s and a detailed architectural model of the London 2012 Aquatics Centre designed by Zaha Hadid.
