Grandson of Sigmund Freud, born in Germany in 1922, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1933 at the age of just 11 to escape the Nazi fury, Lucian Freud is one of the most famous British artists of the 20th century. Known as a painter, Freud was also a keen printmaker, producing versions of many of the subjects featured in his paintings: portrait heads, nudes, dogs and landscapes. Etchings that were never exact copies of the paintings, but were conceived independently and required separate preparation sessions. Freud loved this engraving technique for the "element of danger and mystery" inherent in the process of creating the work. This exhibition at the V&A arises from a collection of 143 etchings acquired by the London museum in 2019. Today, for the first time, these artworks are exhibited to the public in a selection of 38 etchings to tell a little-known part of Lucian Freud's artistic career.
