Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Siena was one of the most artistically prolific cities in Italy. The Tuscan city was at the center of commercial traffic between Rome and Northern Italy, it had acquired great political and commercial prestige which it soon gave shape to with extraordinary architectural and artistic works. This exhibition at the National Gallery will tell the story of the fertile period of the first 50 years of the 1300s which saw the birth of the works of recognized Masters such as Simone Martini and Duccio di Buoninsegna but also of less famous painters such as the Sienese brothers Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The exhibition will showcase the painters' radical experimentation in conceiving new types of objects, such as large, multi-tiered altarpieces and personal devotional works in a variety of forms. Several crucial examples will be brought together in the exhibition for the first time since their dispersal long ago. Exploring the evolution of a typically local and at the same time indisputably international art, the exhibition will retrace the impact and vitality of Sienese art as far as France, England and Bohemia.
