Qi Baishi's poetics on plain paper

Qi Baishi's poetics on plain paper
#Exhibitions

The curator Hang Chunxiao chose paper as a key to understanding the brushstrokes and ink marks that Qi Baishi made in his artistic practice. This is an original choice that allows us to go to the origins of the innovation that the "old painter from Beijing" brought to art. They are drawings made on the most diverse paper supports: wrapping paper, calligraphy paper, scraps of recycled paper and sheets of greased paper. Poor quality materials, which is why the value of these works is easily underestimated. Yet in this new interpretation, from the 74 series of works on display emerges an original and unique method of producing images where fun and wisdom prevail. For the first time it is possible to admire a long forgotten album, containing a series of 25 pages with drawings of flowers.
