Zhao Gang, Beijing - New York round trip

Zhao Gang, Beijing - New York round trip
#Art

Today Zhao Gang divides his existence between Beijing and New York: a condition that might appear privileged, but which gives him a strong feeling of alienation, as he claims. At the age of 18, the artist had become the youngest member of "Star Group", the avant-garde movement that initiated the process of renewal of Chinese art. Driven by the search for freedom in artistic and political spheres, the collective laid the foundations for the development of contemporary art in China. Zhao Gang's style is characterized by bold and almost exaggerated brushstrokes, through which he asserts his own existence and takes a defiant stance against the prevailing trend of seeking refinement in art. His works celebrate unlimited freedom and authenticity in painting. His personal history and the historical roots of contemporary China are at the center of his artistic research.
