A single beam of light pierces the darkness and changes the course of history. It is the suspended moment captured in The Annunciation by Artemisia Gentileschi, the centrepiece of Masterpiece for Milan 2026, the annual initiative that brings one of Italy's greatest paintings to the city. The Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini presents one of the artist's most powerful works, exceptionally on loan from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples. Painted in 1630, shortly after Artemisia's arrival in Naples, the canvas marks the beginning of her artistic maturity. Here, Caravaggio's dramatic use of light meets Venetian elegance and the refined sensibility of Europe's great Masters: light bursts through the clouds, sumptuous draperies seem to ripple with movement, and the restrained gestures of the protagonists transform a sacred episode into a deeply human experience. The exhibition also offers a rare insight into Artemisia's creative process. Thanks to advanced non-invasive scientific imaging, visitors can discover hidden details of the artist's technique and the materials she employed.
