Fu Yao: When Painting Changes the Rules of the Game

In Fu Yao's paintings, nothing is ever truly fixed. Every brushstroke has the power to alter the course of a work, turning mistakes into insights and the unexpected into new possibilities. This is the essence of Interplaying, the exhibition at Tang Contemporary Art in Beijing that brings together two series tracing the evolution of the artist's practice. In the Scenario series, warhorses, masked knights, merchants, and ancient nomads inhabit compositions constructed like theatrical scenes, where every figure plays a precise role within the narrative. With Interplaying, however, that narrative begins to unravel. The characters fragment, giving way to chessboards, grids, fields of color, and abstract forms. Painting no longer follows a predetermined script but unfolds through constant decisions, revisions, and unexpected turns. For Fu Yao, the "game" evoked by the exhibition's title is not about chess but about the creative process itself. Every brushstroke reshapes the next, and every apparent mistake becomes an opportunity. In this delicate balance between control and chance, memory and invention, the painting gradually comes to life. Rather than presenting a finished image, Interplaying invites viewers to witness painting in the act of becoming, revealing the beauty of an artwork that never stops evolving.
