How could you not be seduced by the vivacious underwater life that animates the depth of Bali’s crystal-clear waters - from East to West, there are numerous points on the island to participate in “snorkelling safaris”, swimming amidst an infinite variety of multicoloured tropical fish, giant moray eels and barracudas or diving amidst coral of a multitude of shapes, sea sponges, turtles, oysters, cliffs and historic shipwrecks. Like diving in an immense aquarium, in Padangbai, it is possible to sight manta rays, pygmy sea horses, giant frogs, barrier sharks and dangerous stonefish. In Amed, a must-see is the underwater temple Underwater Post Office and the underwater sculptures of the Jemeluk Underwater Gallery. Pemuteran Beach hosts Biorock, the most magnificent and largest barrier reef in the world where expanses of coral create extraordinary effects among statues of Buddha and Ganesha. Conceived for those who don’t possess a scuba diving certification and don’t wish to take a brief course during their stay, there’s the sea walker, a way of strolling through the ocean among all the natural splendour, wearing a comfortable helmet connected to an oxygen tube running to the surface. All of this is also done with an “eco-friendly” spirit which is an integral part of the island’s character, in total respect for the reef and ocean environment. From May to October is the best period for these types of activities - the ocean, during the rainy season, can be highly agitated and, thus, visibility is compromised. Swimming with dolphins and diving among sharks are among the most thrilling activities to undertake in the ocean off Bali for lovers of these fascinating creatures.
On the hills of Bali, Ubud stands on the edge of the tropical forest and terraced rice fields dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, among the most famous on the island.
