An image, a sentence, a misplaced detail: in the work of John Baldessari, anything can become a device for questioning the meaning of art. A central figure of American Conceptualism, the artist built over five decades a practice that blends photography, cinema, text, and irony, constantly challenging the way images produce meaning. A major institutional exhibition in China traces this creative journey, presenting works that span fifty years of artistic research. The turning point came in 1970 with the iconic Cremation Project, when Baldessari burned much of his early paintings to mark the beginning of a new, more conceptual phase of his career. From that moment on, his work evolved through experimental videos, cinematic montages, manipulated photographs, and compositions where words and images confront and reshape one another. The exhibition brings together artworks, archival materials, artist books, and maquettes, capturing the playful yet critical spirit that made Baldessari one of the most influential artists on the international scene. Alongside his artistic production, the show also highlights his pivotal role as a teacher at CalArts, where he shaped generations of artists through a radically new approach to art education.
