The fable is a literary genre characterized by short compositions, in prose or verse, which usually have animals as protagonists - more rarely plants or inanimate objects - and which are equipped with a "moral". The literary genre of animal fables, which originated in India and Greece in the 1st century BC, was brought by Ibn al-Muqaffa' to the Arab-Islamic world and by Aesop to the Greco-Roman world. Over the millennia, fables have continually transformed and adapted from one language to another, giving rise to many new works in both the East and the West. Organized in collaboration with the Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums, the Fables from East and West exhibition will examine the roots and evolution of this genre through a showcase of illustrated manuscripts, paintings, contemporary works and more.
